Spy Ballon?

UP, Up and Away... USA Shot it Down - US officials released details on the Chinese spy balloon shot down Saturday as investigators began to analyze the parts of the craft collected from the ocean’s surface. The main electronics payload, reportedly the size of a midsize plane, has not yet been recovered from where it sank.

Officials claimed the spy balloon (see history) was equipped with several antennas and solar panels, enough to indicate the presence of multiple intelligence collection systems, likely including high-resolution photography and audio collection of both encrypted and public signals. Analysts observed the craft’s trajectory and traced a path proximate to several sensitive US military sites (see map).

The system is said to be part of a much larger Chinese program of spy balloons known to have surveilled at least 40 countries. Officials believe the order did not come directly from President Xi Jinping.

NY: 3 to 5 inches of snow on top of bitter cold attributed to frigid air streaming in from Canada courtesy of a dip in the polar vortex.

Three degrees this morning on City Island - A Slice of New York City Paradise. A high ribbon of air circles the north pole. The Northeast, especially from the Adirondacks into northern Maine, is taking the biggest hit from the cold air. Air temperatures -- not counting wind chill -- are expected to plunge to 30 below zero or colder. When you add in the wind, places like Whiteface Mountain could feel like 70 degrees below zero.

There appears to be a lot of inflated hot air flying the western skies over Montana and US government officials are taking action.

The balloon belongs to China and is of a civilian nature, used for scientific research, such as meteorological matters," said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, who noted that after being affected by westerly winds and the limitation of its control capacity, it deviated seriously from its scheduled route.
