CITY ISLAND Memorial Day Parade

It was a hot day on City Island as locals paid tribute to our nation's veterans, members of the military, past and present with solemn services and a small parade down City Island Avenue.

Several New York politicians joined past, present and future community leaders on the parade route along with members of the US Marines and Navy, City Island Little League, Theater Group and Boys and Girl Scouts, as well as assorted community groups, including parade organizers The American Legion and many of their officials.

City Island Tours

City Island Images is proud to announce walking tours of City Island and surrounding areas.

Our small tour groups will meet @ the last stop on the #6 SUBWAY, Pelham Bay Station. We will then take the #29 Bus to City Island, where we will begin our journey. Depending on the tour and dates, our stops will include Pelham Cemetery, City Island Historical Society/Museum, The Old Schoolhouse, PS 175, Yacht Clubs, Restaurants, Galleries, Shoppes, Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay Park, Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum. We will finish at the end of City Island Avenue and return to Pelham Bay Station #6 SUBWAY.

CITY ISLAND CIVIC ASSOCIATION

The next Meeting of the City Island Civic Association takes place on Tuesday, May 29th at 7:30pm at 190 Fordham Street. Your input and attendance are welcomed.

The special guest speaker will be Captain Russell Green of the 45th Precinct. Captain Green has been tremendously helpful dealing with crime issues on City Island. He will also address traffic enforcement plans for the summer months. Please keep in mind, enforcement applies to all, visitors and residents, equally.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, when towns honored Civil War dead by decorating their graves. The practice was widespread throughout the North in the late 1860s; over two-dozen towns alleged to be the holiday’s birthplace. But southern women’s groups decorated graves possibly before the end of the Civil War.
