$1.3 BILLION FOR CHILDREN WORLDWIDE

UNICEF appealed today for $1.28 billion to provide humanitarian assistance to children in over 25 countries this year, with nearly one-third of this amount earmarked for the crisis in Africa.

“We have achieved many positive results in emergency settings in 2011 but the urgent and long-term needs of millions of children and their families will continue in 2012,” said Rima Salah, UNICEF’s acting Deputy Executive Director.

The Orchid Show: Patrick Blanc’s Vertical Gardens at The New York Botanical Garden will be unlike any other orchid show ever seen. That’s because the guest designer for the 10th annual exhibition is Patrick Blanc, world-renowned French botanist and artist who will transform the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory with his spectacular vertical walls of living foliage using thousands of orchids and companion plantings as his palette. The Orchid Show: Patrick Blanc's Vertical Gardens opens on March 3 and continues to April 22, 2012.

Syrian Women and Children Killed

Violence has once again erupted in Homs, Syria, only one day after armed forces loyal to President Bashar Assad attacked residential buildings with mortars and machine-gun fire, killing at least 30 people including a family of women and children, according to published reports.

Meanwhile, Western draft proposal on Syria being discussed at The United Nations Security Council contains instructions that in case of non-fulfilment of the resolution within 15 days additional measures will be considered.

Way to go Jimmy Vacca

NYC Council Member James Vacca will join students and faculty from P.S. 72 in Throggs Neck tomorrow, which recently received new SMART Boards and other enhancements to the school’s technology.

Councilman Vacca provided $150,000 through the City Council to fund the project, enabling the school to complete the much-needed upgrades, which will help prepare students to take full advantage of new technology and give teachers a new tool to use in the classroom. UN OUTLINES FIVE-YEAR PLAN

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today outlined a series of actions he believes the global community must take over the next five years to build “the future we want.”

In a speech to the General Assembly last September Mr. Ban presented five imperatives – or generational opportunities – that must be addressed to ensure a better future for the world’s people.
