What a week... First there was the earthquake, which hit the east coast and then tremors, followed by a hurricane. Holy cow- Thank the Lord it's finally over. New York City was spared the worst of earthquake, tremors last week and then Hurricane IRENE this weekend -

By The Grace of GOD, New Yorkers were mostly spared.

Thank God it's over... It has been a very rough week, including an earthquake and tremors, followed by the violent weekend visit from Hurricane IRENE. God's good deed for NYC decade!

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced that Dr. Diane Ravitch, widely considered to be the preeminent education expert in the United States, will offer the keynote address at the first-ever “Bronx Education Summit: From Cradle to Career,” to be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Lehman College.

MAJOR KUDOS FOR NYC MAYOR

Unfortunately, there have been 8 reported deaths do far in our NY, NJ, CT Tri-state area, with the aftermath of IRENE, including one here on City Island.

Today, while millions of commuters dealt with this morning's mayhem, and power blackouts stretched into the third day, while cleanup crews are well on their way... City Island Images wants to take this opportunity to say that even though Mike Bloomberg blew it during last winter's blizzard - Hurricane Irene is another story. Major Kudos go to our New York Mayor this time around. He showed that it is always better to be safe than sorry.

City Island Marina Death

The lifeless body of father of a fisherman was found yesterday floating off one of our City Island marinas hours after Hurricane Irene punched through this area. According to officials, he may be NYC's only reported storm-related fatality.

CITY ISLAND - IRENE AFTERMATH

Hurricane IRENE delivered a significant amount of flooding to City Island. Many residents decided to ride out the storm. Despite being surrounded by water, City Islanders were somewhat skeptic questioning the knowledge of weather forecasters, while others believed there was way too much hype. However, most boat owners secured their vessels and stocked up on supplies, just in case.

Now that the worst of this crisis is behind us, I would like to thank Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Cuomo, the City’s Office of Emergency Management and all City agencies for their hard work keeping my staff and all Bronxites informed about this storm, its effects and how to stay safe. This administration clearly learned from this past winter’s blizzard, and we are grateful to them for their strong response to Hurricane Irene. During the coming days my office will work with OEM and other agencies, as well as Con Edison, to help Bronxites clean up in the aftermath of this storm.

GREEN LIGHT FOR IRENE

Many City Islanders, including Barbara Durham and Donna McGowan rushed to see the water level under the CI Bridge. These two local ladies pointed towards the water level, which they say at high tide had reached very close to the level of the City Island bridge.

CITY ISLAND SKEPTICISM

Some shoppers at IGA on City Island avenue laughed when this reporter asked: "Do you have any batteries left?" At nearby Buddy's hardware, Mary, aka Sandy had been saying "No" for hours. The EverReady, Duracell, as well as all the other brands, which fuel the flashlights which most folks own, had suddenly vanished from our local store shelves.

HURRICANE SEASON... ONLY THE BEGINING

IRENE has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, but beware...Hurricane season does not end today, in fact Jose is on the way. The season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and ends November 30th. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15th and also ends November 30th. It ain't over yet, folks... New hurricanes may come our way!
