City Island's Blessing of The Fleet

Submitted by ub on

This year on City Island the turnout was less than last year, with only 50 vessels receiving their blessings.

Although the Blessing of the Fleet continues to be a longstanding naval tradition symbolizing the start of the boating season.

The parade of boats and kayaks received a blessing on the water. Each one of the boats received a salute and prayer from religious leaders representing the Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal and Jewish faiths.

SHOP WRONG BAKERY

Submitted by ub on

Today I visited a local Supermarket, which takes pride in it's name. Shopping the right way.

My sweetheart wanted some onion and green pepper Foccacia. I asked the clerk if he had any fresh ones and he said they would be making any for a while.

I purchased one with today's date and happily took it home for her only to have her find the bread full of mold and mildew scattered throughout the pie.

What would you do if it was you? New Rochelle Shop Wrong Bakery....NOT EVER, NO WAY!

FEMA RISKS

Under its Risk MAP Program, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing quality flood hazard information to help communities plan for and reduce the risk from flooding. As part of that effort, FEMA Region II has initiated a coastal flood study to update the information shown on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for 14 coastal New Jersey counties and New York City. The FIRM shows each community's flood hazards and is a requirement for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The FIRM is used to determine who must buy flood insurance and where floodplain development regulations apply.

This website, which is updated as progress on the coastal flood study continues, will include links to the online preliminary FIRM panels (once completed), and details on public meetings to review those preliminary results. We encourage you to explore this website to learn more - be sure to check back regularly for updates, or sign up for our Twitter feed. In the meantime, there are steps that you can take now to keep your communities and families safe from flood risk:

FROM HONG KONG TO RUSSIA TO ???

This may become an international tour of US global enemies. Where the infamous leaker stops, perhaps nobody knows.

The former contractor for the U.S. National Security Agency, charged by the United States with espionage has left Hong Kong with his final destination not known, because an official request for his arrest did not comply with the law, according to the Hong Kong government.

Edward Snowden left for Moscow on Sunday, but his final destination may be Cuba, Venezuela, Iceland or Ecuador. This is bound to infuriate Washington, wherever he ends up.

CITY ISLAND SUPER MOON

Images

This one is one of 4-6 super-moons a year on average. It doesn’t sound very special, but tonight's full moon lines up much more closely with perigee, which is the moon’s closest point to Earth.

This full moon falls only 22 minutes after the moon reaches perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth for this month and year. At perigee, the moon lies only 356,991 kilometers (221,824 miles) away. Two weeks later, on July 7, the moon will swing out to apogee – its farthest point for the month and year – at 406,490 kilometers (252,581 miles) distant.

CHARGES FILED AGAINST SNOWDEN

Edward Snowden may be facing arrest if he continues to stay in Hong Kong, after US authorities filed charges, thereby trying to extradite him over leaks on classified surveillance programs.

Mr. Snowden has become a political hot potato between China and US and is currently under protection but has not so far been asked to reveal his trove of intelligence data.

The 29-year-old former CIA employee contractor for the National Security Agency, flew to Hong Kong before leaking detailed evidence of the scale of US hacking and cyber-surveillance programs.

GLOBAL DISCUSSION

Submitted by ub on

Climate Change:

The Earth's climate is changing. Temperatures are rising, snow and rainfall patterns are shifting, and more extreme climate events—like heavy rainstorms and record high temperatures—are already affecting society and ecosystems. Scientists are confident that many of the observed changes in the climate can be linked to the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, caused largely by people burning fossil fuels to generate electricity, heat and cool buildings, and power vehicles.

Individual Rights:

Freedom is not a product of historical destiny, divine intervention or happy accident. Freedom is an intellectual achievement that depends on the vital concept of individual rights.

The right to life is the only fundamental right. It is the moral entitlement to engage in every type of action objectively necessary to sustain a human life. All other rights—including property rights, without which no other rights can exist—are implications of this bedrock right.

SUPER MOON

This weekend we will witness the biggest, brightest full moon of the year shining in the sky, which makes this the perfect time to take in the wonders of the night sky.

Super-moon ranks as the biggest celestial events of the year. The true message of the super-moon lies in a happy medium: It's not a monstrous moon, but it's a great excuse to moon over a monthly sight that we sometimes take for granted.

You can start looking out for June's Super-moon on Saturday night. It's this year's best example of a perigee full moon. Tides will be stronger than usual, but that's nothing to get alarmed about.

For example, for New York City, high water (6.3 feet or 1.9 meters) at The Battery comes at 8:58 p.m. EDT on Sunday, or more than 12 hours after perigee. From Cape Fear, N.C., the highest tide (6.5 feet or 1.9 m) will be attained at 9:06 p.m. EDT on Monday, while at Boston Harbor a peak tide height of 12.3 feet (3.7 m) comes at 12:48 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, almost 2 days after the time of perigee.

A supermoon is a new or full moon that happens to coincide with a close approach of the moon to the earth. Saturday's full moon will be the closest it has been to Earth in 18 years, according to Spaceweather.com.

The biggest, brightest Moon of the year is almost here. On 23 June 2013, a Supermoon will be occurring. What that means is that the Moon will be closer to the Earth than at any other time during the year - in fact, the upcoming Supermoon will be the closest encounter between the Earth and the Moon until August 2014.

The Moon will reach its closest distance to the Earth at exactly 7:32 am EDT (4:32 am PDT) on 23 June, but because it will be peaking in the early morning hours, both 22 June and 23 June will put on similar shows. So either day will be a good opportunity to see the larger-and-brighter-than-normal Supermoon.

This year the Supermoon will be up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical Full Moon is. This is a result of the Moon reaching its perigree - the closest that it gets to the Earth during the course of its orbit. During perigree on 23 June the Moon will be "only" about 221,824 miles away, as compared to the 252,581 miles away that it is at its furthest distance from the Earth (apogee). The Moon will actually be at apogee only two weeks after the Supermoon, on 7 July.
