Ozone season is here once again, and it presents a health hazard to all New Yorkers. Ground level ozone is a harmful pollutant and the main ingredient of “smog”. It forms on hot, sunny days when pollution reacts with sunlight. Ground level ozone can be especially bad for sensitive groups: children, elderly, and those with heart or lung problems. Plants are also at risk for damage from ozone, both directly and indirectly.
There are several things you can do to help reduce ground-level ozone:
Use public transportation. Ride a bike, a train or a bus.
Drive efficiently. Keep your damn foot off that accelerator.
Buy air-friendly products. No spray cans...PLEASE?
The Air Quality Index (AQI) Forecast will tell you the expected ozone levels for the day and if it is safe to participate in outdoor activities. Check our website, social media, or call the toll-free Ozone Hotline: 1-800-535-1345 for Air Quality advisories.
