The second Charles has announced a retirement from Sunday morning TV. CBS' Charles Osgood said he is ending 22 years as the host of 'Sunday Morning.'
The first anchorman of the famed broadcast weekly news and information program was Charles Kuralt. He was known first for his "On the Road" segments on The CBS Evening News, and later as the first anchor of CBS News Sunday Morning, a position he held for fifteen years.
Before Charles Osgood took over, I was working as a producer on NBC's TODAY. Tom Brokaw had been tapped to anchor Nightly News and the executive producer of the program asked me who I thought should follow Brokaw. Without hesitation, I said Charles Osgood. He did not agree with me and hired Bryant Gumbel. You know how long that lasted and what a disaster that morning program has endured since then. As they say, the rest is history.
