Back in 1517, Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation by nailing a proclamation to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany.

Pope Francis' visit to Sweeden is not only historic but also remarkable.

The pontiff is marking the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which is an extremely bold gesture given his Jesuit order was founded to defend the faith against reforms that hold an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted.

The Pope will join Lutheran leaders for a joint commemoration of the anniversary of monk Martin Luther’s challenge to Catholic dogma may not seem like an event to celebrate from the Vatican’s perspective, but Francis’ participation is part of the Vatican’s wider efforts to mend ties with other Christians.

Pope Francis meets the Swedish prime minister and the royal family to participate in an ecumenical prayer service at the Lutheran cathedral in Lund, southern Sweden.

@Pontifex asks for prayers that his journey to Sweden might contribute to the unity of all Christians worldwide, seeking that everyone abandons the language of condemnation and embrace one of mercy.
