All the hullabaloo over the Pope and Donald Trump is obscuring the remarkable thing the leader of the Catholic Church said today. He said that in an area with zika-carrying mosquitoes, it would be permissible to use a condom to avoid pregnancy, and the threat of severe birth defects in a newborn. That may not seem like a big deal to a lot of non-Catholics who would read that and say, "of course you would." But it is an interesting step all the same. When I was covering a summit on HIV at the Vatican I asked a cardinal whether a couple with mixed status (one HIV positive, one not) might use a condom to keep one partner from infecting the other. I noted that many of these couples were very young. The cardinal said his best advice for such a couple would be to remain married, and remain celibate, for the rest of their lives. Which didn't sound like very practical advice at all.

The Pope is more popular than any political candidate and those who have faith may see that God will provide the answer. But please understand that sometimes it takes a while to be able to recognize what God wants, because God's voice is usually nothing more than a whisper.

Voters have to listen carefully to hear it but there have been times, when the answer is obvious and rings as loud as a church bell. If religious leaders rise on faith, do all politicians just run on hot air? The US electorate will decide in due time and on judgement day.
