The United States of America may become divided after the revolution of 2016, if history indeed repeats itself.
The Revolution of 1800, occurred when Vice President Thomas Jefferson defeated President John Adams. This was a realigning election that ushered in a generation of Democratic-Republican Party rule and the eventual demise of the Federalist Party of George Washington as the First Party System.
During this election of 1800, Federalists cast Thomas Jefferson as an infidel because of his platform on the separation of Church and State. Adams ran as Jefferson's main opponent, running mates Jefferson and Aaron Burr received the same number of electoral votes.
Negative campaigning can be traced back to John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Back in 1776, the dynamic duo combined powers to help claim America's independence, and they had nothing but love and respect for one another. But by 1800, party politics had so distanced the pair that, for the first and last time in U.S. history, a president found himself running against his VP.
