This week Bronx and Manhattan Borough Presidents joined NYC Council Members and approximately two hundred City Islanders to protest the proposed closure of City Island FDNY Ladder 53.

Unfortunately, this is the fourth straight year that a mayoral budget dance has proposed eliminating Ladder 53 on City Island. If this Ladder Company closes, it will take the next-nearest ladder company over ten precious minutes to respond to any emergency. That is if neither one of of those two drawbridges are raised.

It was 68 years ago today and veterans throughout The United State of America still remember one of the most significant days in world history - It is simply know as "D-Day".

City Islanders Russel Schaller and Robert Branizza both recall that fateful day. Branazza says he vaguely remembers watching it all from from the sky. However, Russel Schaller says his recollections of D Day actually began on June 4th, when his 33rd Photo Reconnaissance Squadron was restricted to the base. There were no evening junkets, or visits to the local pub allowed.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has written a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg outlining the potential damage the mayor’s proposed cuts to the Out of School Time (OST) after-school program would have on the Bronx. Diaz urges Mayor Bloomberg to commit to fully funding these critical programs.

Reed Reed was a native of Kansas City, Missouri and founded The Platters in Los Angeles, back in 1953. It was originally a quartet, the group won a string of talent shows, and performed up and down the California coast while the members worked days at a car wash and at other odd jobs.

All eyes were on "I'll Have Another" as the horse was considered a possibility of winning this weekend's third race. But don't place your bet on that iconic horse race just yet. It appears that those paying attention to the Belmont Stakes want a momentous, history-making victory. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since 1978, it’s a popular sentiment to bet on I’ll Have Another, if just for the souvenir ticket and the boost it could give the sport.
