Today is Tax Day and this dreaded day was made worse by being on Monday. Financial procrastinators had an extra weekend to file their taxes, and thos lucky enough to live in New England can thank Patriot's Day for extending the deadline until Tuesday.

Most everyone agrees that City Island is not just a marvelous place to call home, but its also wonderful to visit. If you go out for a leisurely stroll, or a bike ride, the chances of meeting folks who are truly delighted dramatically increases. These visitors are amazed that such a place still exists in New York City.

One attraction many visitors may overlook is the loving memorial wall that our resident artist and award winning photographer Ron Terner has painstakingly developed and designed over the years.

Millennials may be on track to be our most educated generation ever, but they consistently score below many of their international peers in literacy, numeracy, and problem solving. Meanwhile, Educational Testing Service researchers expect to contuse tracking the job skills of young adults.

ECUADOR QUAKE

A powerful, 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit residents of Ecuador's central coast on Saturday, cracking buildings and shaking homes as far away as Quito, the capital city. Some say the earthquake was felt for about 40 seconds and people fled to the streets in fear.

The capital city of Quito was 170 kilometers (105 miles) from the quake's epicenter and knocked out electricity and cellphone coverage in several neighborhoods in this European styled capital.

There are angry complaints about the state of our current system of education and they not only come from parents and students, but now employers lament their recent hires with their newly minted, or indebted degrees were under-prepared, but these complaints that are nothing new, but seem to have grown louder over the years. Why is that?

The National Congress of the Cuban Communist Party takes place less than one month after President Obama made a historic visit, and is expected to deal with the influx of American tourists and investment headed their way.

Xian Food

My wife was born in Shanghai and has taken me to some of the best restaurants in that region of China. Her best friend is from Xian, so naturally these two gorgeous ladies took me to taste the best Chinese food in NY, according to them and many others.

I can honestly say the food from Xian food is extremely tasty and not oily, or greasy. It was not only delightfully delicious, but the prices were less than what I was expecting.

FIDEL and GABE

On April 15, 1959, Fidel Castro arrived in New York to begin an 11-day visit.

He had just triumphed in the revolution he led that overthrew the Cuban government. He was in New York to speak at the United Nations. But that was only the official purpose.

Actually, as I remember it, Castro was like a schoolboy, delighted to see the big city and all its wonders, including the Bronx Zoo and to sample the cuisine — notably, hot dogs.
