FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

Submitted by ub on

Society will always need a free press. Investigative journalism must continue to be relevant. We need reporting that polices our institutions and uncovers truths. But important findings should not arrive in the form of short reports. Documentaries, long journal articles and in-depth reports are increasingly important.

NICKEL RIDES

Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man died after suffering a spine injury during police custody. There apparently have been no clear reason for his arrest, and still no specific answers about what exactly happened to him.

Yesterday State Attorney Marilyn Mosby charged six cops with crimes including second-degree murder, manslaughter and assault. No only could Gray have been taken for an unnecessary rough ride, but "No crime had been committed by Mr. Gray," she added these officers "illegally arrested Mr. Gray."

It is being called the fight of the century. Today boxing fans are expecting to see the largest-grossing fight in history, with the biggest purse, the greatest pay-per-view buys and highest ticket prices.

It may be the one of the most significant athletic events in the last 50 years. The Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao bout in Las Vegas is a big deal.

Why is this the biggest fight ever? Two grown macho men fighting over pretty purses, while other men place bets on the outcome of the boxing match.

Ben E. King was one of those R&B and soul singers who inspired many other artists of our generation. He is best known for classics like “Stand by Me,” King died at age 76 of natural causes.

Born Benjamin Earl Nelson, he initially joined a doo-wop group called The Five Crowns, which became The Drifters after that group's manager fired the band's previous members. He co-wrote and sang on the band's single There Goes My Baby, which reached number two in the US in 1959.
