The National Park Service's 96th birthday presents opportunities facing our national parks as they near their second century. From the shores of Acadia to the battlefields at Gettysburg, the petroglyphs at Mesa Verde and the bison that roam Yellowstone, our 397 national parks protect and preserve America's heritage.
The sense of balance typically worsens with age. It can be further compromised by certain medical conditions and medications; uncorrected vision problems; or a lack of flexibility. Poor balance often leads to falls, which can cause head and other disabling injuries. Hip fractures, in particular, can lead to serious health complications and threaten independence. A combination of activities such as walking, strength training, and specific workouts can improve balance and prevent falls, especially in older adults.

Taxi and Limousine Commission adopted rules allowing the TLC to eliminate the fare from the decals adorning the exterior of New York City’s iconic yellow taxi fleet. Earlier this week, New York City Council Transportation James Vacca wrote to TLC Chairman David Yassky asking for clarification regarding those rules. While no response to that letter (attached separately) has been received, it is clear that the TLC intends to move forward with its ill-advised plan to remove the fare information from the exterior of the City’s yellow cab fleet.
The Kingsbridge National Ice Center (KNIC) would bring a total of nine regulation hockey rinks to the Kingsbridge Armory, featuring a 5,000 seat showplace area as its anchor, making it one of the largest ice sports centers in the world.
Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer, Council Member Gale A. Brewer, State Assembly Member Linda B. Rosenthal, Riverside Park Fund President John Herrold, Community Board 7 Chair Emeritus Mel Wymore, community members, and neighborhood children to cut the ribbon on $900,000 in improvements to Neufeld Playground at Riverside Park.
