IMMIGRATION REFORM

US Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus has signed a discharge petition to force House Republican leadership to allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

The discharge petition would force a vote on the House floor on H.R. 15, the bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, if 218 members of Congress sign on. A recent study by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that H.R. 15 would reduce the nation’s deficit by $900 billion.

A US Senate bipartisan group has announced the framework for an immigration reform bill they hope to approve by late spring or early summer. The framework includes a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already living in the US, as well as a plan to better secure US borders.

A total of 14 Republicans joined 54 Senate Democrats to pass immigration reform bill.

US Representative Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) issued the statement following Senate passage of comprehensive immigration reform.

68 Organizations Seek Immigration Reform

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, along with and 68 community-based organizations from all over the country committed to improving the health and well-being of Asian American, Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian communities and advancing health equity, submitted written testimony to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary for today's hearing on the bipartisan Senate immigration bill, "The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act" (S.744).

In their testimony, these organizations urged Congress to rethink the barriers their bill places on health care access for immigrants.

US Senator Marco Rubio is a Cuban American Republican from the state of Florida. Rubio did something, which has never been done before. He appeared on all seven Sunday TV programs during his most public pitch yet for the emerging immigration reform bill and arguing that it would control the border.

Obama Issues Executive Immigration Order

President Obama is currently announcing an executive order regarding his administration's new policy for granting young immigrants workers permits. The announcement is being broadcast live from the White House Rose Garden.

This current administration has reportedly deported more illegal immigrants than any previous administration and with 150 days left before election day, critics say he had to do something to increase his popularity.
