This weekend, City Island Images celebrates the life of Israel Isidore Baline. (May 11, 1888 – September 22, 1989) This was one of the greatest songwriters in American history. An amazing lyricist of Jewish heritage, who published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy", in 1907 and had his first major international hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911.

A United Nations-backed committee has endorsed a set of far-reaching global guidelines to help governments protect the rights of people, especially the poor, to own or access land, forests and fisheries.

“Giving poor and vulnerable people secure and equitable rights to access land and other natural resources is a key condition in the fight against hunger and poverty,” said the Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), José Graziano da Silva.

NYC Council Member James Vacca will join local community leaders and friends and family members of Peggy Braverman today, at the intersection of Astor Avenue and Matthews Avenue, to unveil an honorary street sign marking “Peggy Braverman Way.” The street name honor was approved by the City Council in February 2012 at Vacca’s request to honor Braverman’s decades of community involvement and activism.

Visit NYBG to see the early burst of color in the award-winning, sustainable Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden. The mild weather has prompted roses to bloom about a month earlier than in previous years. Peak bloom is expected just in time for Mother’s Day Weekend. A full complement of rose-themed public education programs kicks off this weekend, including daily tours, a special full-day lecture series, Home Gardening Demonstrations, and Adult Education classes, all providing opportunities to appreciate and learn more about the rose, an iconic flower whose beauty continues to fascinate.

He is defining it as a political issue, embracing the Hollywood elite members and saying that it shows how the Democrats vision of the country differs from Republicans.

CLEAN-UP TIME

It's Lagoon Clean-up time once again. Friends of Pelham Bay Park have organized this event in conjunction with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) takes places this Saturday, May 11th.

Landlubbers will meet at the Bartow-Pell Mansion located at 895 Shore Road at 9:30 am to remove shoreline debris.

Rowers will meet at 9:00 am at the Orchard Beach kayak launch by the northwest (far left) side of the parking lot to haul debris across the water. Rangers will be on hand to teach basic skills. Launch time is 9:30 am.
