KENTUCKY DERBY - Good, Bad and Ugly

Submitted by ub on

The good news is the record breaking winner of this years Kentucky Derby, I’ll Have Another. The horse was overlooked at 15-1 in the field of 20, then made history by becoming the first horse to win the 138th Run for the Roses by 1½ lengths over Bodemeister from post 19 on a hot, Saturday afternoon before a record crowd of 150,000 + fans.

The bad news is that a body found in the stable area of Churchill Downs the morning after the Kentucky Derby, which officials are investigating as a homicide. Police say the death didn't appear to have associations with Churchill Downs.

English Channel tunnel opens. During a ceremony presided over by England's Queen Elizabeth II and French President Francois Mitterand, a rail tunnel under the English Channel was officially opened, connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time since the Ice Age. The channel tunnel, or "Chunnel," connects Folkstone, England, with Sangatte, France, 31 miles away. The Chunnel cut travel time between England and France to a swift 35 minutes and eventually between London and Paris to two-and-a-half hours.

That "supermoon" did light up the sky on Saturday night.
This once a once-a-year cosmic show managed to overshadow a meteor shower from remnants of Halley's Comet.

The Moon seemed especially big and bright since it reached its closest spot to Earth at the same time it is in its full phase.
