New Parking Garage Opens March 31

Located at 401 Bedford Park Boulevard, adjacent to the Metro-North Botanical Garden Station and just a short walk from the Garden's new Bedford Park Gate (view on Garden map), this brand-new, secure, self-park garage is easily accessible from all directions and will be available to Garden visitors as an alternate parking location. The Garden will no longer be using the Fordham University lot for overflow parking.

US SENATOR GILLIBRAND: EDUCATION CONSORTIUM

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, congratulated the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE) for winning the 2012 Environmental Quality Award. The non-profit agency, which Senator Gillibrand nominated this past February, is partnering with Sustainable South Bronx and the Osborne Association to recruit and train Bronx residents for city jobs in emerging green industries.

P.S. 102 becomes City Island’s Fourth Designation

At the Council’s Stated Meeting on Wednesday, March 28, the Council voted unanimously in favor of designating the City Island Nautical Museum, the former P.S. 102 and P.S. 17 City Island School, as a New York City Landmark.

Senior Citizen Abuse

A New York State Elder Abuse Prevalence Study reveals that 1 out of 13 older adults have been victimized in one form of elder abuse in the last few years. There are a couple of dozen unknown cases for every case reported. Also 14% of older New Yorkers have experienced some form of elder abuse since turning age 60.

In around 90% of reported cases, the abuser was a friend, or family member and most frequently was an adult child, or a spouse.

New Director of Harvard Medical School

Harvard Medical School Professor of Medicine Russell S. Phillips has been appointed inaugural Director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care by Jeffrey S. Flier, dean of the faculty of medicine. Andrew L. Ellner, instructor in medicine, will assume the position of co-director. Both Phillips and Ellner, along with Professor of Medicine David Bates, co-led the Center on an interim basis. Bates will continue to work with the Center closely as an advisor.

SYRIA ACCEPTS UN-ARAB LEAGUE PLAN

The Syrian Government has accepted the six-point plan put forward by the Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States, Kofi Annan, who described the move as “an important initial step” to end the violence and urged President Bashar Al-Assad to put the proposal into effect immediately.

Although Syria accepted Annan's peace plan, which includes a cease-fire by the Syrian government, the bloodshed continues as heavy fighting crossed the Lebanese border.
