For many people, eating out is a way of life. Most of these meals are purely a matter of convenience: a sandwich from the supermarket deli counter, drive-through burgers, or take-out Mexican, or Chinese food.

On this first day of spring it was so foggy on City Island this morning that people standing on the corner of Fordham street and City Island avenue waved down the bus, only to have it pass them by.
It's not that the bus driver could not see me, but the bus had a driver in training and was not taking any passengers. No worries, about ten minutes later the 29 Bus came along and stopped as they do normally. Everything is much harder to see during fog.

Those who are fortunate enough to speak two languages, rather than just one have obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But now scientists point out that the advantages of bilingualism are even better than being able to speak with a wider range of individuals. Their research indicates that being bilingual makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on the brain, improving skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia as these people get older.
