At a special General Assembly meeting, top United Nations officials have urged Member States to increase their collaborative efforts to prevent human trafficking and protect its victims.

“Where traffickers use threats and weapons, we must respond with laws and prosecutions,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said during an interactive dialogue meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York, entitled “Fighting Human Trafficking: Partnership and Innovation to End Violence Against Women.”

Vigilance Against Synthetic Marijuana

NYC Councilman James Vacca, (D-Bronx), will be joined by NY State Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, (D-Bronx/ Westchester), and local community leaders to urge the public to keep an eye out for the continued sale of synthetic marijuana in their communities. The substance, which had been readily available at corner stores and smoke shops throughout New York, was banned last week via an executive order by Governor Cuomo. However, Klein and Vacca have found at least one case where this dangerous product continues to be sold in the Bronx.

NYC EDC RETAIL DEVELOPMENT

New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today announced the selection of Equity One, Inc. to redevelop an 80,000-square-foot site located along the Broadway retail corridor in the Bronx. Equity One plans to invest approximately $54 million to construct a new 133,000-square-foot, two-story multi-tenant retail development and approximately 130 covered parking spaces on the site, located on 230th Street between Broadway and the Major Deegan Expressway. The project is expected to create over 250 new full and part-time jobs and approximately 500 construction jobs.
