Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., Council Member James Vacca will present Lehman High School students Tiana Quattrucci, a senior, and Alban Hoxha, a junior, with New York City Council Citations for their extraordinary efforts for the Lehman Law Team.

The Garden Club of City Island was founded by four women back in the early 60's and they are now celebrating their 51th anniversary this year. On Thursday, May 24 they will host a luncheon at The City Island Yacht Club, "The calla lilies are in bloom again".

City Island Images spoke with the club's lone survivor from its four original founding members, the legendary City Island real estate broker and a wonderful woman who has earned her advanced degree in conversation, Jacqueline Kall. Jackie has asked us to invite one and all to this annual spring event.

BRONX MUSEUM - FREE

While most museums are raising their prices, the Bronx Museum of the Arts is now FREE.
This is part of their 40th anniversary celebration, the museum will not charge admission to visitors starting TODAY @ 11A. 718 681 6000

This welcomed pilot program is funded with a $62,000 grant from the New York Community Trust.
It covers admission and publicity for 15 months. Their plan is to continue this free service. Also as part of the anniversary celebration, the museum has acquired 40 works for its permanent collection and adopted 45 neighborhood schools.

The food and nutrition crisis facing countries in West Africa’s drought-prone Sahel region has continued to deteriorate at an alarming rate despite commendable early response efforts by governments and international aid agencies, a senior United Nations official said today.

“We are in a race against time and some of the harshest climatic conditions on the planet,” said the Director of Operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), John Ging, after returning from a week-long mission to Niger, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

US SENATOR GILLIBRAND: EDUCATION CONSORTIUM

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, congratulated the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE) for winning the 2012 Environmental Quality Award. The non-profit agency, which Senator Gillibrand nominated this past February, is partnering with Sustainable South Bronx and the Osborne Association to recruit and train Bronx residents for city jobs in emerging green industries.

P.S. 102 becomes City Island’s Fourth Designation

At the Council’s Stated Meeting on Wednesday, March 28, the Council voted unanimously in favor of designating the City Island Nautical Museum, the former P.S. 102 and P.S. 17 City Island School, as a New York City Landmark.
