Anne Hutchinson Freedom Festival

Submitted by ub on

Anne Hutchinson would have been surprised if she walked into Pell Mansion today. Hutchinson was a very intelligent and strong-willed person, and she was not afraid of speaking her mind and defending her principles in face of stiff opposition. But she may have felt special and become speechless to view the special celebration, which included music, games, crafts, storytelling, madrigals and dances.
But the message is and will always continue to be FREEDOM.

Hutchinson was born in July 1591 to Bridget Dryden and Francis Marbury, Anne Hutchinson grew up in England. Her dad was a deacon at Christ Church, Cambridge and later became the rector of St. Martin's Vintry, St. Pancras, and St. Margaret's.

Francis Marbury was to perhaps have the strongest influence on Anne Hutchinson. He was a principled and outspoken man. He did not hesitate from speaking his mind on things that mattered deeply to him and as it happened there were plenty of things about the Church, its theology and clergy that bothered him and compelled him to speak out against.

Religious tolerance was at an even lower ebb in those days than in the present age. People were routinely killed and tortured for questioning Church diktats. So it required a great deal of courage to speak out the way Francis Marbury did. Not once or twice, but continuously and despite the many times he was arrested and jailed for being seditious. He was a very brave man and his daughter gained his spirit in full.

Education for women was not a burning issue in those times, but Anne Hutchinson was home-schooled and had the free run of her father's extensive library. The more she read, the more she began to examine and question established beliefs.

However, his Congressional colleagues just want him to leave and leading Democrats have now called on Weiner to resign, while he only says he'll take a leave of absence from Congress and enter a treatment program.

The weekend began with a major blow to Weiner's chances for survival, as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, all issued statements urging Weiner to leave Congress.

NYC Largest Park

Submitted by ub on

It's Pelham Bay Park, which is located in the northeast corner of The Bronx, is the largest public park in New York City, more than three times the size of Central Park. It includes land on both sides of the Hutchinson River and all of Hunter Island in Long Island Sound (now also part of the mainland).

On its north is the village of Pelham Manor in Westchester County. The park borders the Bronx neighborhoods of Pelham Bay, and Co-op City. The southern part of Rodman's Neck is not part of the park but is occupied by the NYPD gun and rifle Firing Range.

City Island is at the extreme western end of Long Island Sound, south of Pelham Bay and east of Eastchester Bay. The body of water between City Island and Hart Island to the east is known as City Island Harbor.

Bronx Courthouse

The Beaux-Arts building is located on the Grand Concourse and East 158th street. It was built in 1933 by architects M Hausel and J Freedlander.

The structure was erected when the Bronx was a borough, but not yet a county. The Bronx only attained county status in 1914 and until then, it was a part of New York County, which since 1914 has been made up of the Borough of Manhattan.
