CITY ISLAND BRIDGE: SIGNED, SEALED...

The City Island Bridge is located in NYC and connects City Island to Rodman's Neck in The Bronx. The bridge is made of stone and steel. It currently spans 950 ft. The original construction began in 1899 and was completed at a cost of $200,000. It consists of five fixed spans and a central swing section, but that feature was converted to a fixed span back in 1963.

NYC plans to demolish the bridge, due to its deteriorated condition, and replace it with a cable-stayed bridge. The current design calls for a 150 ft high tower, 13 ft wide at the top, with a base of 26 ft. Vertical clearance above high water would be 12 ft. The new bridge would be located in the same footprint as the existing bridge, although it will be 17 ft wider to accommodate three standard-width traffic lanes, a pedestrian walkway and bike lane.

The city chose Tutor Perini as the general contractor in February 2013. Tutor Perini has also been awarded a contract to build the new George Washington Bridge Bus Station Redevelopment Project in New York City for George Washington Bridge Development Venture

TP has also been awarded the contract to build the South Tower at Hudson Yards, a 26-acre mixed-use development in midtown Manhattan. The 1.7 million-square-foot, 47-story South Tower, located at the northeast corner of 10th Avenue and 30th Street, will be the future home of Coach, Inc.’s world headquarters.

TP has started its preliminary work on the City Island Bridge and expects be finished as early as 2016. Their NYC accepted bid came in at $102.7 million, but some City Island residents, including Chamber of Commerce president Gerard Skip Giacco, oppose the design because they say the tower would be out of character with the low-rise homes on City Island.
They claim the bridge will be too high and for that reason DOT has scheduled a meeting on the City Island Bridge. The procedural event will be held at PS 175 on Monday, September 23rd, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

DOT says the meeting is being held by Bronx Community Board 10. The NYC DOT Bronx Borough Commissioner and representatives from the Division of Bridges, the Commissioner's Executive Staff will all be present.

The DOT says that in keeping with policy, this is a meeting with the Community Board held prior to the start of construction, and the agency will present the expected construction schedule as well as construction mitigation and planned community outreach.

DOT tells City Island Images they've worked tirelessly over many years to maintain the existing structure while also working closely with the community on a replacement plan. Outreach with local elected officials, civic associations and community members has included a dozen public meetings and presentations and countless conversations. DOT presented the design plan to the Borough President, Councilmember Vacca, Congressman Crowley, and Community Board 10 and the agency has made substantial changes to the design, including significantly shorter towers at the request of the community. The existing City Island Bridge is now far past its intended life span and shows significant deterioration; the project for the new bridge has to move ahead.

Meanwhile, the NYC Department of Transportation has hired multimedia artist Stephen Mallon to produce media to support The City Island Bridge project.

Mallon tells City Island Images that he has delivered the content he and his crew shot, while visiting City Island, but does not have permission to release it.

His company, Stephen Mallon Images, which is is located at 122 Washington Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. was asked to produce media for their City Island Bridge presentation which will be used on.

This same award winning firm previously produced another NYC bridge media presentation. Then it was also in The Bronx and it was on the replacement of the Willis Avenue Bridge. They have also produced a few others. Mallon Images has delivered multimedia projects for Flatiron, Pershing Square, and our favorite one, which is Behind the Scenes at The Metropolitan Opera.

NYC Democratic nominee Bill de Blasio reportedly begins the upcoming election with a 41-point lead in the mayor's race, according to the latest political polling figures.

The poll shows de Blasio leading GOP nominee Joe Lhota 66-25. Independence Party candidate

City Island resident Adolfo Carrion, a former Obama administration official and former Democratic Bronx borough president, is at a how low can you go 2 percent.

De Blasio is NYC's public advocate and he enjoys a massive lead among black and Hispanic voters He leads by double digits among political independents, 53-36.

Lhota, a former chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority may be hard-pressed to pull a comeback. While de Blasio is better-known, more voters have an unfavorable view of Lhota (35 percent) than of de Blasio (21 percent). More than six in 10 likely New York voters have a favorable impression of de Blasio, while just three in 10 say the same of Lhota.

Considering NYC liberal bent, it is not surprising that s Democrat is leading, but Bill de Blasio could be elected the first Democratic mayor in two decades.

The Sept. 19 New York City poll of likely voters found big racial gap in de Blasio blowout in New York City; Democrat ties Lhota on taxes and leads every other measure, According to the Quinnipiac University figures.

This poll is based on a random sample of adults, 18 years of age and older. A random sample is one in which everyone in the population has an equal chance of being selected.

They typically report the poll results based on registered voters (self identified), rather than all adults, because our polls focus on politics and elections. As we get closer to an election, they will report the results based on likely voters.

They use screen questions to determine likely voters. We use different screen questions depending on the election (ie. primary vs general election, presidential vs. off-year election, etc.). In past elections, they have used questions measuring intention to vote, attention to the campaign, past voting behavior, and interest in politics to identify who is likely vote.

Only adults are interviewed because they use the demographic information for weighting purposes. Weighting is a statistical adjustment of the data. Gender, age, education, race, and region are the demographics that are weighted to reflect census information.

They use random digit dial (RDD) sampling. In RDD sampling, phone numbers are randomly generated by a computer. RDD is used to ensure that both listed and unlisted phone numbers have a chance of being included in the sample. Quinnipiac purchases samples from Survey Sampling in Shelton, Conn.

Typically, the field period for interviewing is four to seven days. The university pollsters call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. Additional hours are added to weekend calling during busier polling times.

If there is a no answer, they will "call back" that number. They will call every number where there is a no answer at least three times. They also call cell phones. This is important to do because more than a quarter of the nation is cell only and young people are much more likely than older people to be cell only.

They do interview in Spanish, if a respondent prefers to be interviewed in Spanish.

They also use live callers, not prerecorded voices. Our interviewer staff is a mix of students and non-students who are professionally trained and closely monitored.

They have 150 Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) stations. Our CATI software is WebCATI from CfMC (Computers for Marketing Corporation).

Move over New York, we're now the Second City for murders in US, second to Chicago.

According to FBI crime statistics released this week, Chicago had more homicides in 2012 than NYC, or any other city in the country. There were 500 murders in Chicago last year, according to the FBI and New York City had 419.

In 2011, there were 515 homicides in the Big Apple, compared with the 431 in Chicago.

But residents of Chicago and NYC were much less likely to be victims of a homicide than those in Flint, Michigan where there were 63 killings, which is an unbelievable statistic considering Flint's population is 101,632. This means that 1 in every 1,613 residents were homicide victims. In Detroit, Michigan there were 386 killings in 2012, That is 1 in 1,832 homicide victims.

The FBI estimated the number of violent crimes increased 0.7 percent, according to the same figures. However, property crimes decreased 0.9 percent, marking the 10th straight year of declines for these offenses, collectively.

The 2012 statistics show that the estimated rate of violent crime was 386.9 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants, and the property crime rate was 2,859.2 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. While the violent crime rate remained virtually unchanged when compared to the 2011 rate, the property crime rate declined 1.6 percent.

Guns were used in the vast majority of slayings in the United States last year. According to the FBI data, 69.3 percent involved a firearm.

Overall, violent crime — homicides and aggravated assaults — was up less than 1 percent in 2012, according to FBI data.

On the first day of gridlock, congress said to me.... Obamacare belongs in the bottom of the sea.

No, not again? Starting on October 1, 2013, the US economy could freeze over following a forced government shutdown because of the healthcare overhaul known as Obamacare.

The Republican-led US House of Representatives is about to to pass a bill that would fund government operations but not Obamacare. The president says some House Republicans are risking a US government shutdown.
