HERNANDO DE SOTO

On this day in 1541, ancestor and well known Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto reached the Mississippi River.

De Soto, who was an accomplished conqueror was born at Villanueva de la Serena, Badajoz, Spain, 1496 and died on the banks of the Mississippi the latter part of June, 1542.

GLOBAL JOBS CRISIS CONTINUES

The global employment situation is alarming, says a new United Nations report released today, which also warns that recovery is not expected any time soon.

The World of Work Report 2012: Better Jobs for a Better Economy – published by the UN International Labor Organization (ILO) – says that around 50 million jobs are still missing compared to the situation that existed before the global economic crisis.

Tomorrow, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. will join Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene, the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), NYSERDA, and environmental group Sustainable South Bronx will launch the Green Jobs/Green New York Bronx Outreach Program (GJ/GNY-Bronx).

The goal of the GJGNY-BX Program is to reduce energy usage in Bronx buildings and lower energy costs for Bronx home and building owners.

Apple Computer's Steve Jobs is dead at 56. Jobs was born February 24, 1955, to two University of Wisconsin graduate students who decided to give him up for adoption.

Steve Jobs experimented with different pursuits before starting Apple Computers with Stephen Wozniak in the Jobs' family garage. The company's revolutionary products, which include the iPod, iPhone and iPads have dictated the evolution of modern technology.

His family is seeking privacy at their moment of grief. He will surely be missed.

Native New Yorker and 22 year old Mario Ayala is back on City Island after serving a long year of active duty in Afghanistan. This well deserved vacation is an opportunity for him to reconnect with his family, his friends and to enjoy time away from the everyday stress and duties of being a service member assigned to war.
