TWO GOPS SAY NO THIS WEEK

Submitted by ub on

This week, the people who many Republicans wanted to run, finally declared they would not run and those who are still in the race are not making extraordinary gains.

In a statement to supporters, Palin, who was the 2008 vice presidential nominee said she would not seek the Republican nomination for the Presidency by entering what is already a crowded field. Instead, she vows to be more effective helping GOP win office from the nation's governors to congressional seats as well as the top job.

Across the country, we the people appear to be on the march, protesting what is perceived as the excesses of Wall Street. The movement was sparked by a small group of protesters camping out in a New York City park and now has affected the passions of thousands.

From far away it looks like a rock festival the morning after, with scattered sleeping bags. But the demonstrators taking part in the three-week-old protest against Wall Street have created a functioning city within the city, a small, working democracy.

BIKING NYC

Submitted by ub on

Biking is a great way to see the city. It's good exercise, easy on the wallet and good for the environment.

It's even more fun to ride if you know where to go, where to find a good bike shop and how to connect with local riders. A city’s bicycle community can point you in the right direction for the type of riding you like.

Ir was in June of 2009 when the city reached its ambitious goal of building 200 bike-lane miles in all five boroughs. In just three years, it nearly doubled the citywide on-street bike network while reshaping the city's streets to make them safer for everyone.

A fuel tanker offloading gasoline at a Pelham Manor service station erupted in a fireball before dawn. The explosion destroyed a truck and a snack shop but luckily caused no injuries. Firefighters from several towns kept the resulting fire from spreading to the station's stored gasoline.

The Oil City station is adjacent to one shopping center and across Pelham Parkway from another. Firefighters from Yonkers and White Plains helped the village department keep storage tanks cool while battling the truck fire. Investigators don't know the cause of the fire.
