Cuban born Margarita Agullar has been named as the new director of Museo del Barrio. Her appointment becomes effective in September. Aguilar served in the curatorial department at El Museo from 1998 to 2006, and is currently Vice President and Senior Specialist in Latin American art for Christie’s.

The Central Park & New York International Latino Film Festivals

The Central Park Film Festival and the New York International Latino Film Festival kick off this month.

The 9th Annual Central Park Film Festival takes place at Rumsey Playfield. Screenings are free and guests are allowed to bring their own food. Films start at 8pm; gates open at 6:30pm at the Mineral Springs, just north of the Sheep Meadow, mid-park at 69th Street.

Tuesday, August 23: El Cantante, a story about the creator of the salsa movement, Hector Lavoe (Marc Anthony), and how he brought the phenomenon to the United States.

American Legion Lifetime Achievement Award

The City Island Leonard Hawkins American Legion Post held their annual Clam Bake this weekend. Although all tickets were sold out before the event, the group literally baked in the asphalt paved parking lot of their City Island Avenue headquarters.

Kudos to 88 year old Sargent Emeritus Russell Schaller, who was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award by The City Island American Legion. He is seen standing behind and holding his distinguished award. Thanks to photojournalist Cathy Mazzaro for providing these City Island Images.

CITY ISLAND SAYS SO LONG TO MOTHER PATTY

Mother Patty from City Island's Grace Episcopal Church at 104 City Island Avenue celebrated her final mass with many members of her congregation, as well as well as various well wishers from the City Island community.

Her last religious service was held on Sunday July 31 and she now goes on a well deserved vacation.

New York City journalist starts online newspaper

City Island has a new web-based paper that is updated daily by an experienced journalist.

Roberto Soto, a City Island resident for the past 15 years and the first news director of News 12 The Bronx, started City Island Images from his Fordham Street apartment about two months ago.

The Bronx Culture Trolley is a project of the South Bronx Cultural Corridor. The trolley was initiated in December 2002 to encourage, create and maintain a higher level of arts participation and business development along the Bronx's lower Grand Concourse while promoting the “Cultural Corridor” of the South Bronx as a tourism destination.
