This program is administered by the National Park Service
GOAL: To restore, renovate, preserve and operate Execution Rocks Lighthouse, NY,which is part of our heritage and nation’s treasures.

In North America, the Summer solstice began on June 21, 2013 at 1:04 A.M. EDT

Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.

As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December.

Heat freezes out Spurs in Game 7 to clinch the National Basketball Association final game seven playoff in Miami, Florida.

The Heat claimed victory after LeBron James nailed a jumper to make the final score 92-88 with 27.9 seconds left on the clock.

King James was fouled and hit both foul shots to put Miami up six with 23.5 seconds remaining. The entire arena full of cheering of Miami Heat fans, who were wearing white, immediately started took advantage of their home court by celebrating as the clock ticked down to zero.

Independence Day Commemoration

A special reading of the Declaration of Independence highlights the annual commemoration of Independence Day, at St. Paul’s Church N.H.S., in Mt. Vernon, on Thursday, July 4, beginning at 10:30 AM.

The reading of America’s founding charter is accompanied by a 13-ring salute on the historic church bell, which was cast in 1758. Keynote speaker is Professor Lisa Keller of SUNY Purchase.
