A couple of elderly City Island friends plan to celebrate Valentine's Day at 88 years young is their own special way, proving that friendship is the foundation for love.

Jackie Kyle and Russel Schaller have been good friends many decades, but the pair grew fonder for each other when their respective spouses passed away.

Russel tells City Island Images he plans to invite Jackie out on the town. Meanwhile Jackie says she will soon be dropping off chocolates inside his mailbox.

CLEAN TECHNOLOGY VEHICLES

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. joined state and city officials, as well as representatives of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, to announce that electric truck manufacturer Smith Electric Vehicles will soon open a new state of the art electric truck manufacturing facility at the former Port Morris lamp warehouse at 275 Locust Avenue. Smith Electric Vehicles hopes to create more than 100 local “green” jobs.

Good Listeners:

focus attention on the message.
control reactions to trigger words.
set aside personal problems when listening.
work to overcome distractions.
don't let their biases interfere with listening.
don't let speaker mannerisms interfere with listening.
listen for things they can use.
recognize the role of the listener in communication.
listen actively.
reserve judgement until a speaker it finished.

Bad Listeners:

allow their minds to wander.
respond emotionally to trigger words.

9/11 - A Personal Note

http://t.co/DGyIVpB via @addthis - They say "Time heals all wounds" - For all first responders, as well as for journalists who worked on 9/11 and the days following those horrific attacks on WTC- Today felt in some ways, just like it was yesterday. Therefore, I think an edit could be made to update it and say "time heals most wounds".

City Island Community Center, or Personal Piggy Bank?

As a long-time resident of City Island, a true and total owner of a condo at The Old Schoolhouse - PS 17, located at 190 Fordham Street, I am very concerned about how the City Island Community Center has not fulfilled it’s mission: to provide our City Island community a space for City Island residents to celebrate through educational, cultural and artistic events produced by and for City Islanders.

There is a notion that to stay fit and healthy we need to consume good food and content.

This phrase has come to us via quite a tortuous route. Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, in Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante, 1826: Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.

In an essay entitled Concerning Spiritualism and Materialism, 1863/4, Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach wrote: 'man is what he eats'.

KIDS LIVE WELL

Starting today, children will find some cool new choices on their restaurant menus. These choices will also make the adults happy.

More than 15,000 restaurants in the USA representing 19 chains, including the likes of Burger King, I-HOP, Cracker Barrel, Chili's, Denny's and others are participating in a voluntary new initiative called Kids LiveWell.
