SOUNDVIEW FERRY?

History clearly attributes the profound success of New York City to its ports and waterways. Rediscovering and reinventing how these same assets can be used today is what I believe this ferry service proposal represents. This proposal deserves to be tested, and it is my hope that, in partnership with your office, we can make this pilot program a reality, writes Borough President Diaz in his letter to Mayor de Blasio. Some other elected officials and organizations are joining Diaz to support the three-year pilot proposal.

Difficult Sub-Zero Temperatures Ahead

NY Governor Andrew M. Cuomo will activate the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. to monitor a potent winter storm that will impact New York State Thursday and Friday. This storm will likely produce moderate to heavy snowfall across a large portion of the state, and may also result in coastal flooding and beach erosion. This system will also add to the bitter cold already being experienced statewide. There is a windchill watch for the southern and western Adirondacks with values from -30 to -40 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

CAR FREE DAY

As part of the Town of North Hempstead’s ongoing “green” effort to reduce their carbon footprint, the Town Board recently announced that the they will be sponsoring the 1st Annual Car Free Day Long Island.

Car Free Day is an international event celebrated every September in which people are encouraged to get around without cars and instead ride a train, bus, bicycle, carpool, subway or walk. This year, Car Free Day will be coming to Long Island for the first time on Friday, September 20, 2013.

NYC MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER SADIK-KHAN ANNOUNCE SPEED CAMERA ENFORCEMENT WILL BEGIN ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, SEPTEMBER 9TH

Speed cameras will be installed near schools, museums, community centers and crash prone areas to deter speeding. which is the largest single contributing factor to traffic fatalities in New York City.

The city has revealed that it will be installing dozens of cameras across the city in an attempt to cut down on idiots who insist on speeding.

Emergency Hearing on Subway Deaths

On February 7, NYC Council Member James Vacca, who chairs the Transportation Committee, will hold an emergency hearing on the recent spate of deaths in New York City’s subway system and what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is doing to prevent them.

So far in 2013, subway trains have already killed seven people. In 2012, 141 people were struck by trains, 55 fatally.
