I'm an experienced educator and after completing a semester with 50 19-year-olds I can honestly say that education is on life support.

Public education first gained a foothold in American in the 1830's. The goal of such education was to create a literate and productive citizenry with a common system of morals. Today, the definition of public education has become broader. Also known as state schoolsin other countries, public schools dominate the American landscape as a standard in services provided by the government.

On this last day of teacher appreciation week, I wish to pay tribute to my late mom, who was a teacher, Miss Calhoun and Ms. Gibson.

As a young immigrant, Ms. Calhoun and Ms. Gibson were my elementary teachers who helped me learn to read, write, and speak English and to speak up and fly like an Eagle.

In the '90s, I moved to City Island - A Slice of NYC Paradise to build News 12 The Bronx. I then hired and trained my new staff. Following a successful launch, I was recruited by The Associated Press to serve as its founding television news, NY Bureau Chief.

As the school year ends, many students will be only too happy to see math classes in their rearview mirrors.

It may seem to some of us non-mathematicians that geometry and trigonometry were created by the Greeks as a form of torture, so imagine our amazement when we heard two high school seniors had proved a mathematical puzzle that was thought to be impossible for 2,000 years.
