The next Meeting of the City Island Civic Association takes place on Tuesday, May 29th at 7:30pm at 190 Fordham Street. Your input and attendance are welcomed.

The special guest speaker will be Captain Russell Green of the 45th Precinct. Captain Green has been tremendously helpful dealing with crime issues on City Island. He will also address traffic enforcement plans for the summer months. Please keep in mind, enforcement applies to all, visitors and residents, equally.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, when towns honored Civil War dead by decorating their graves. The practice was widespread throughout the North in the late 1860s; over two-dozen towns alleged to be the holiday’s birthplace. But southern women’s groups decorated graves possibly before the end of the Civil War.

The City Island Society of Clam-diggers and Mussel-suckers has been formed to recognize those exceptional individuals who, over time, have made extraordinary contributions to the character and quality of their City Island community and culture.

Below are the criteria:

Individual has served in an active role for at least ten years at the time of nomination.
Individual is either a clam digger, or a mussel-sucker in good standing.
Individual demonstrates a keen understanding of City Island's history.
Individual promotes civility on and inside this fabulous island.

City Island Walking Tours

City Images is proud to announce walking tours of City Island and surrounding areas.

Our small tour groups will meet @ the last stop on the #6 SUBWAY, Pelham Bay Station. We will then take the #29 Bus to City Island, where we will begin our journey. Depending on the tour and dates, our stops will include Pelham Cemetery, City Island Historical Society/Museum, The Old Schoolhouse, PS 175, Yacht Clubs, Restaurants, Galleries, Shoppes, Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay Park, Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum. We will finish at the end of City Island Avenue and return to Pelham Bay Station #6 SUBWAY.

Fordham University and Bronx Community College Grants

US Representative Jose E. Serrano, the longest serving local congressman proudly announces that the US Department of Education is funding grants for Upward Bound Programs at Fordham and BCC for the coming year and perhaps for the next five years.

BCC will reportedly be receiving $ 479,000 and Fordham U. is earmarked for $379,000. These programs help prepare students in undeserved communities to academically prepare when they arrive to their higher education institution.

May 27, 1941
Bismarck sunk by Royal Navy. The British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France. The German death toll was more than 2,000. This 823-foot Bismarck was launched at Hamburg. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler hoped that the state-of-the-art battleship would herald the rebirth of the German surface battle fleet. However, after the outbreak of war, Britain closely guarded ocean routes from Germany to the Atlantic Ocean, and only U-boats moved freely through the war zone.

SYRIA DENIES MASSACRE. Nearly 100 Killed, Including Women And Children.
At least 90 people, including at least 32 children under the age of 10, were massacred at a central Syrian village, according to United Nations observers, who are accusing the Syrian government of perpetrating the indiscriminate shelling of civilian neighborhoods.
