Today, May 23, 2012 NYC Council Members James Vacca, Chair of the Transportation Committee, and Domenic Recchia, Chair of the Finance Committee, will hold a joint hearing to discuss the Administration’s Executive Budgets with respect to transportation.

Since the Committee’s preliminary budget hearings, MTA’s capital plan has been fully funded through 2014, but the Agency has planned fare hikes of 7.5% in both January 2013 and January 2015. The head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said today the agency will temporarily halt some activities owing to the $65 million budget shortfall resulting from the United States’ decision to withhold its dues, and launched a new online tool to enable donors to help offset the loss.

The new fund is one of several measures announced by Director-General Irina Bokova in an address to the 36th session of UNESCO’s General Conference that ended today in Paris.

NYC School Budget Axe Compensations

In addition to its role as the New York City's legislative body, the city council works with the Mayor to develop and approve the city’s annual budget. Unfortunately city schools are contending with a third straight year of budget cuts.

To ensure that the budget that is passed reflects New Yorkers’ needs and priorities, the council members conduct a review of all city agencies, the policies, the programs and the expenses. The Council says it wants to ensure that the process is as transparent and accountable as possible.
